This section offers a selection of handmade pennanulars in sterling silver and base metals. These items are handmade and we usually only have one of each in stock at any given time, so availability is subject to prior sale.  We do our best to keep up, but weekend sales may take a couple of days to update. Unless otherwise marked, we currently have one of each penannular currently in stock. NOTE: Just as different weights of material are best suited to different conditions, so are some penannulars better suited to certain weights of material. The total weight of fabric pulling on the pennanular is a critical factor, as is the structure and material of the pennanular itself. A short, heavy-weight wool should be OK with a pennanular rated medium. A pennanular which is itself heavy, should not be used on a light-weight fabric, and tightly woven fabrics should have eyelets. The "Recommended Use" column provides our generic recommendations on which weights of fabric each pennanular is best suited to.

How to use a penannular brooch to hold a cloak together:
1. Swing the pin to the outside of the penannular ring.
2. Holding the pin, insert it through the fabric layers, so the pin slides through fabric from both sides and out onto the surface again.
3. Swing the penannular back over the pin.
4. Rotate the ring so that the opening is above the pin.
5. Pass the pin up through the opening, then turn the ring beneath it to keep the fabric from sliding off.

The penannular brooch, or the Celtic brooch is a circular clothes fastener, most often used as a cloak pin, or fastener for thick broadweave cloth. Typical clothes fastener of early medieval Ireland - Celtic Brooches feature a long pin attached by its head to a ring; the pin can move freely around the ring as far as the terminals, which are close together. In the true penannular type, the ring is not closed; there is a gap between the terminals wide enough for the pin to pass through. The term 'penannular' is used for brooches like this which have a gap in their hoop.The penannular cloak pin is a simple and efficient way of fastening loosely woven cloth (where the pin will not leave a permanent hole)

Both men and women of rank in Ireland wore brooches of this form: first the pin was stabbed through the folds of a cloak and then one end of the ring was pushed under the sharp end of the pin where it came out of the cloth. The ring was then turned until the pin tip lay securely locked in place beyond the raised bump of the decorated terminal.

These pins are also great decorative fasteners for kilts, shawls and sweaters. While the celtic brroches of old were gold and silver, ours are jewelers brass, pewter, stainless steel or nickel silver.
